JACOBO : AS AN ARTIST

Did you grow up in an environment conductive to Art?

Yes, I did. My parents lived in a neighbourhood of painters.My father used to take me to see his friends in the art galleries and the studio of Rafael Canogar filled up with drawings and brushes of every colour.

What has been the revelation that inspired you the artistic vocation?

I can’t remember what led me to my dance carrier. I first started with music and soon I showed an interest in classical then it became flamenco. I have learned tango since I was thirteen. I realized the need of having a unique style, and so I started with Middle Eastern technique.

Have you received a specific artistic training?

I studied theatre and music in England. Back in Spain I went straight into the flamenco school of Amor de Dios and then travelled to Egypt and learned the Sufi style. I started performing and I attended the workshops of the Suraya Hillal in Paris.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Performance art is inspiring me in general. It is a good way of saying things. I like to play with Gender and be able to evoque many messages.

Is there any particular artist that inspires you?

I was shocked when I learned about Madame Orlan and what she did for Arts. How you could transform yourself into anything you dreamed of. Admirable.

What is your most significant artistic experience?

I did many shows with Cirque du Soleil. It is certainly what formed my artistic carrier. I had the chance to see and share all kind of techniques. Meet the most amazing family I could have dreamed of. And enjoy the pleasure of a well-fed audience.

How do the MUGLER FOLLIES fit in your artistic career?

As a kid my Mom used to dress with Mugler’s clothing and I loved to see her in those wonderful outfits. Now is my time to show the revolutionary style of Manfred. I admire and understand his work.

JACOBO : AS AN INDIVIDUAL

Where are you from?

I was born in Madrid, Spain. My family is from the north and from the south. Then I had the chance to live in England, Texas, Egypt, Canada, New York and Paris. And if there were a theatre in Venus I would move there in a heartbeat.

Do you have any distinctive sign?

I am a horse whisperer, or at least that’s what they said in Iran when I was doing a documentary for Niemeyer on Daresury horses. It is very rewarding to spend time among those animals.

What is your favorite place?

When I need to get back to my roots, I go South to the gardens of Atlas. A place called El Cañuelo in Bolonia; down in Cadiz, Spain.

What would be the best compliment you can receive?

Someone once said to me that by watching my performance, she felt like to be part of an Omar Khayyam’s poem. Unforgettable.
